Kids Path*, a specialized program of Hospice of the Piedmont, is designed to meet the special needs of children and teens with a life-limiting illness, and to offer counseling for those experiencing life changes due to the illness or death of a loved one.

Grief counseling includes short-term individual, family, and group counseling for children and adolescents (ages 3 to 18) in schools, at our office, and occasionally in the home. In addition, special workshops and other activities are scheduled throughout the year.

For children with a life-limiting illness, the entire Kids Path team led by the children's counselor and Kids Path pediatric nurse provide comprehensive care with special emphasis on the needs of young patients and their families.

The goal of care is to help a child with a serious illness live as normally as possible.

The Kids Path team partners with a child's physician through every stage of any serious illness. Services can be provided from the time of diagnosis through the course of the illness with three different levels of care:
  • Supportive care offers psychosocial and emotional support for children and their families through counseling and other services.
  • Home health skilled nursing care is provided for children with potentially life-threatening or chronic illnesses. In addition to regular visits by nurses and other team members, around the clock on-call services are available.
  • Hospice care is offered to children with life-threatening illnesses whose life expectancy is measured by months rather than years. A physician's order is required. Care is provided by the interdisciplinary team including nurses, nursing assistants, social worker (children's counselor), chaplain, and volunteer for the patient and other family members.
As with other Hospice of the Piedmont services, Kids Path accepts private insurance, Medicaid and other third party payment for its medical services. With generous community support, services are provided regardless of financial circumstances. All bereavement services are provided free of charge with generous contributions from the community.
